This soundscape opens with an interview of one of the farmers on the importance of planting trees. Cacao trees need shade and so with re-forestation programs, they improve the quality of the beans as well as the whole ecosystem because a more diverse flora will attract a more diverse fauna. On the farms of the Femmes de Virunga, you hear the big handmade sieves, made from leaves, where they put the cocoa seeds in to shake the debris out. It is one of the sounds that we rarely get to hear, because it is usually done by machines. This sound really tells you how much love the Femmes put into their product.
Very rarely cacao farmers get to taste the finished chocolate as we find them in the store. With Pennie and Elaine travelling to Virunga, the farmers and the people working around the farm finally got to taste the chocolate and we’re glad to hear one of the honest opinions from one of the employees: ‘C’est Bon, C’est Bon’.
